Canada continues to be a leader in providing safe spaces for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. In 2019, Canada welcomed over 30,000 refugees who were given the chance to build a better life for themselves and their families. Achieving career success: Ayman’s Story

With two kids in tow, Ayman and his wife fled Afghanistan and migrated to Quebec looking for a brighter future. Ayman first started working at survival jobs to support his family. “I had to work in some survival jobs just to cover everyday expenses,” he says.

While working at survival jobs, Ayman, an international medical graduate, spent four months knocking on the doors of clinics and hospitals for the chance to observe Canadian medical practices and acquire knowledge. After months, Ayman was finally accepted into the intensive care unit. He began to strategize ways to save money for his qualification exams, but it wasn’t easy.

“I heard about Windmill from someone on social media,” says Ayman. After reaching out to Windmill Microlending, Ayman secured a loan that helped pay for exam fees and materials. Soon Ayman was able to focus on studying, not surviving.

He is thankful that Windmill Microlending was there, not only to help secure financial loans, but to navigate his path towards achieving his goal of becoming a doctor.

Like many skilled refugees in Canada, Ayman is helping to fill a significant labour shortage in the health care industry.
