If you want to live and work in Canada permanently, you’ll need to apply for permanent residency. There are many benefits to becoming a permanent resident, but it is competitive and can be expensive. Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs and sponsorship are three ways that an immigrant can become a permanent resident of Canada. In this blog, we’ll discuss the benefits of becoming a permanent resident and what you can do with a permanent resident card.
There are many benefits to being a permanent resident of Canada. Permanent residents have the freedom to live and work anywhere in the country – they are not tied to a specific location. In addition, permanent residents also get access to free medical care and social services. They are eligible to apply for a provincial health card, which can be used to access medical care in a hospital or from a family doctor.
Permanent residents also have the opportunity to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner and dependent children to join them in Canada. Their children can access free education up until secondary school and post-secondary education is cheaper for permanent residents than it is for international students.
What is a permanent resident card?
Every permanent resident receives a permanent resident card as proof of their new status in Canada. This card is used to travel in and out of the country and it is valid for 5 years. The Canadian government advises permanent residents to apply for a new card 9 months before their existing card expires.
If a permanent resident travels outside of Canada without a valid PR card, they must apply online for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD). A PR card or a PRTD is required, along with a valid passport, for entry to Canada via plane, train, boat or bus.
