Donating to charity is a rewarding way to give back. Charitable donations not only support important causes but they also provide significant tax credits that can reduce your overall tax burden. This blog outlines how charitable donations impact your taxes in Canada, helping you maximize both your contributions and your savings.
How do charitable donations reduce taxes?
In Canada, when you donate to a registered charity, you receive a tax credit that reduces the amount of income tax you owe. You can find the complete list of Canadian charities here. The tax credit amount depends on the total value of your donations and your income level. Here's a simple breakdown:
Federal tax credit:
- The first $200 of charitable donations provides a federal tax credit of 15%.
- Any amount over $200 receives a federal tax credit of 29% (or 33% if your taxable income is over $214,368).
Provincial tax credit:
- Each province and territory in Canada offers additional tax credits for charitable donations. For example, in Ontario, you can receive a 5.05% credit on the first $200 and an 11.16% credit on any amount over $200.
Example calculation:
If you donate $500 in Ontario:
- Federal tax credit: (15% of $200) + (29% of $300) = $30 + $87 = $117
- Provincial tax credit: (5.05% of $200) + (11.16% of $300) = $10.10 + $33.48 = $43.58
- Total tax credit: $117 + $43.58 = $160.58
This means your $500 donation would reduce your taxes by $160.58.
Maximizing your tax savings:
To maximize your tax savings:
- Combine donations: You and your spouse can combine donations to get a higher tax credit.
- Carry forward donations: If you don't use all your donation credits in one year, you can carry them forward for up to five years.
- Donate securities: Donating publicly traded securities directly to a charity can eliminate capital gains tax and provide a larger tax credit.
