In this blog, we'll walk you through the steps and requirements to help you successfully get your DZ license in Ontario.

Understanding the DZ License

A DZ license is required to operate vehicles over 11,000 kilograms (kg) gross weight or vehicles towing a trailer not exceeding 4,600 kg. This license is essential for individuals who wish to drive delivery trucks, dump trucks and other medium-duty vehicles.

Minimum Requirements

G Class License: Before applying for a DZ license, you need to have a valid G license. The G-class license allows you to operate regular cars and it is the foundation for upgrading to a DZ license.

Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a DZ license in Ontario.

Clean Driving Record: A clean driving record is essential. Any history of serious traffic violations may hinder your application.

Steps to Obtain a DZ License

Study the Official Handbook:

  • Familiarize yourself with the Ontario Official Truck Handbook. This guide contains valuable information about road safety, traffic rules and regulations specific to commercial vehicles.

Training Program:

  • Enroll in a Ministry-approved DZ training program. These programs provide essential knowledge and practical skills required for safe and responsible commercial driving. The training can last up to 6 weeks, requiring 90 hours of training including both classroom sessions and hands-on vehicle operation.

Medical Examination:

  • Schedule a medical examination with a licensed medical professional. The results will be submitted as part of your license application. This step ensures you are physically fit to operate commercial vehicles.

Knowledge Test:

  • Prepare for and pass the written knowledge test at a DriveTest Centre. The test covers air brakes, vehicle inspection and general driving knowledge related to commercial vehicles.

Air Brake Endorsement (Z):

  • If the vehicle you intend to operate is equipped with air brakes, you'll need to obtain an air brake endorsement (Z) by passing the air brake knowledge test and practical test.

Practical Road Test:

  • Schedule and pass the DZ practical road test at a DriveTest Centre. The test assesses your ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely in various driving conditions.

License Application:

  • Once you've completed all the required tests, submit your application for a DZ license at a ServiceOntario location. Pay the applicable fees and your new license will be issued.

Practice, Practice, Practice: Spend ample time practicing your driving skills, especially with the type of vehicle you'll be operating. Familiarity with the vehicle and its handling is crucial for success.
